MONROVIA. June 9 (LINA) – The Grand Mufti of Liberia has lauded President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., and his government for providing an opportunity for more than 1000 Liberians to go Mecca this year.
According to the Grand Mufti Abubakar Sumaworo, this is the first time since Liberia was founded for Liberian Muslims to travel to Mecca, the Holy Land, with such a huge number.
Sumaworo made the statement on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, when Liberian Muslims joined Muslims around the world to celebrate Abraham Day at the Gurley Street Mosque in Central Monrovia.
He noted that the Liberian Government bilateral relationship between Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates were able to provide free plane tickets for Liberian Muslims.
He expressed thanks and appreciation to these counties for assisting Liberian Muslims and also acknowledged the roles of the government in ensuring that Liberian Muslims made the trip to Mecca.
Meanwhile, the Grand Mufti has called on the Muslim community in Liberia to be united and be peaceful in their endeavor.
According to him, a peaceful co-existence is critical to enhancing socio and economic growth among Liberians, thus facilitating national growth.
He stressed that as Muslims, they should abide by the rule of law and desist from any form of violence in the society.
He maintained that unity among the people will go a long way to strengthen the transformation of the country’s developmental drive and every Liberian should contribute toward sustaining the peace.
