MONROVIA, Aug. 14 (LINA) – The Ministry of National Defense has launched a report documenting the legacy and contributions of India’s all-women Formed Police Unit that served with the United Nations Mission in Liberia from 2007 to 2016.

The launch took place at the Cape Hotel in Monrovia. Brigadier General Geraldine Janet George (Rtd.), Minister of National Defense, served as Chief Launcher.

Speaking at the ceremony on Tuesday August 11, 2026, in Monrovia, Minister George said the deployment of the Indian all-women FPU was significant not only for peace and security, but also because it showed the vital role women can play in protecting communities and restoring public confidence after conflict.

She noted that Liberia emerged from a devastating civil war with the task of rebuilding institutions and restoring trust in the security sector.

The Indian unit, she said, provided an example of discipline, professionalism, and meaningful women’s participation in peace operations.

According to the Minister, the service of the Indian FPU also sent a strong message to Liberian women and girls.

She stated that women are not just beneficiaries of peace, but essential actors in creating and sustaining it.

Minister George commended the Ducor Institute for Social and Economic Research for conducting the study.

She said the report helps preserve an important chapter of Liberia’s peacebuilding history and should guide future policies on women, peace and security.

She added that the legacy of the Indian FPU goes beyond their years of service. It forms part of Liberia’s journey toward more inclusive security institutions and stronger international partnerships.

On behalf of the Government of Liberia, the Minister thanked the Government and people of India, the United Nations, members of the Indian FPU, and all Liberians who supported the mission.

She concluded that the report should inspire greater commitment to women’s leadership in peace and security, and strengthen cooperation between Liberia, India and the United Nations. The program was attended by government officials, security leadership, UN representatives, civil society, and the Embassy of India in Monrovia.
