MONROVIA, June 18 (LINA) – As a non-permanent member to the United Nations Security Council, Liberia is set to perform new role at the UNGA, a role that will make one of the three African nations elected on the Security Council to chair the United Nations Security Council beginning December 2026 in the United States.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the Minister of Information Jerolinmek Matthew Piah said Liberia will for the first time in 60 years assume the rotating presidency at the UN Security Council, a historical milestone for the country image.
According to Minister Piah, Liberia will hold the council presidency and directly preside over top UN bodies for International Peace and Security.
Minister Piah said the country leadership, through President Boakai, with diplomatic oversight spearheaded by foreigner Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti and Head of Liberia UN Security Council members Lewis G. Brown will guide council deliberations, influence monthly agenda and facilitate negotiations on critical global conflicts.
Minister Piah further noted that at least 22 high profile Liberians are expected to be recruited to join other permanent Liberia at the United Nations headquarters to help strengthen the Liberian office in insuring active activities before Liberia assume her role.
Minister Piah said the opportunity will served as a critical period for Liberia on the global diplomatic stage when she assumes the presiding role at the United Nations Security Council in December.
He said Liberia has been granted the opportunity as the only UN Security Council African member currently serving at the UN, without any conflicted situations unlike the other two members.
