GoL Hails Three Liberian Descents For Their Inclusion At 2026 FIFA World Cup In Americas

MONROVIA, June 17 (LINA) – The Government and People of Liberia have through the Ministry of Youth Sports, applauded three professional soccer athletes with Liberian origins, Alphonso Davies representing Canada National Team, Timothy Weah and Haji Wright representing the United States of America Soccer Team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to a release by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, dated June 12, 2026, the inclusion of the three professional soccer players in the most talked about FIFA World Cup recognizes their exceptional skills and talents of Liberian heritage whose achievements continue to inspire young people across the globe. 

As a player, Wright plays as a forward for English club Conventry City whose performance at the highest level of football continues to inspire young athletes in football.

Timothy Weah, a son of former Liberian President and Ballon d’Or winner, George Manneh Weah, who is representing the United States alongside Haji Wright on the international scene while carrying forward a legacy deeply rooted and tie to his father as a Liberian descent likewise, the Canadian Professional, Alphonso Davies, whose remarkable journey from a Liberian refugee family to becoming one of the world’s most respected footballers.

The selection of the three players stand as a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and excellence as the footballers continue to demonstrate to the world that Liberians are dedicated and resilient people.  Davies, the German League 1 Club, Bayern Munich player continues to display his Liberianism as the youngest captain of the Canadian National Team in FIFA World Cup 2026.

The MYS statement added that despite their representations of different nations, the three players hold and share a Liberian heritage that continues to make our country proud and inspire others who are wanting to step in their footprints.

Their participation in the FIFA 2026 World Cup, is an accomplishment which serves as a source of inspiration to countless young Liberian soccer athletes, demonstrating that talent, hard work, and perseverance can open doors to limitless opportunities anywhere no matter where you find yourself.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as one of the pillars of the Government of Liberia, appreciates Timothy Weah, Haji Wright and Alphonso Davies for their contributions to the global game and for exemplifying the strength, character, and potential of people with Liberian roots that they are talented, dedicated and resilience.

Alphonso Boyle Davies (born November 2, 2000) is a professional soccer player who plays as a left-back, winger, or wing-back for Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and was born to Liberian parents in Buduburam, a refugee camp in Ghana, the fourth youngest of six siblings.

Timothy Tarpeh Weah (born February 22, 2000) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a winger or right-back for Ligue 1 club Marseille, on loan from Serie A club Juventus, Weah was born on February 22, 2000, in Brooklyn, New York, to Liberia George Weah (at the time a professional footballer) and his Jamaican wife Clar. 

Haji Amir Wright (born March 27, 1998) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a forward or winger for Premier League club Coventry City and his second cousin, Isaac Nana Addai, played for the Liberia National Team Under -23.
