MONROVIA, Aug. 14 (LINA) – Liberia’s Information Minister, Jerolinmek M. Piah has acknowledged recent tension at the Sorlumba border in Lofa County, but assures the public that the situation is now peaceful, calm, and stable.

Addressing the Ministry of Information regular press conference on Tuesday, August 10, 2026 in Monrovia, Minister Piah said the tension arose at a buffer zone between Guinean military personnel and the Liberia Joint Security due to a disagreement over the location of checkpoints.

According to the Minister, in an effort to de-escalate the situation, a high-level meeting was held at the buffer zone immediately between a high-level Guinean delegation and members of the Liberian Joint Security.

He pointed out that both parties agreed during the meeting that Liberia and Guinea share long-standing relations as neighboring countries and must remain united.

“Hence there was no need for security personnel from either side of the border to engage in confrontation. It was agreed that both parties should remain calm and exercise restraint while we all work toward a peaceful resolution,” Minister Piah noted.

The Minister furthered that the situation is being closely monitored by the National Security Council and that appropriate diplomatic redress is being pursued to ensure lasting stability along the border.

“Presently, the situation at the Sorlumba border area is peaceful, calm and stable, no need for our people to panic,” he stated.

Minister Piah called on citizens in the area to continue their normal activities, assuring them that the Government of Liberia is working to ensure the matter is brought to bed diplomatically.

The Sorlumba border is one of several crossing points between Liberia and Guinea in Lofa County and is frequently used by traders and travelers from both countries.
