MONROVIA, Oct. 18 (LINA) — The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has called for increased investment in young people and their participation in decision-making processes to advance Liberia’s national development.
UNDP Liberia Resident Representative Aliou Mamadou Dia made the call at the Liberia History and Leadership Summit held on October 13, 2026, held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development in Monrovia.
Dia said young people must be equipped with the skills, resources, and opportunities needed to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.
He noted that with more than three-quarters of Liberia’s population under the age of 35, the country’s future depends largely on its ability to respond to the aspirations and needs of its young population.
According to Dia, investments in education, skills development, employment, governance, and peacebuilding are essential to enabling young Liberians to realize their full potential.
“Investing in young people is investing in Liberia’s future,” he said.
He emphasized that young people should not only have access to training and education but also be given meaningful opportunities to participate in decisions affecting their communities and the country.
Dia also highlighted UNDP’s support for youth empowerment initiatives, including the expansion of Liberia’s National Cadet Program, which provides recent university graduates with practical work experience, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
More than 1,000 graduates, according to him are expected to benefit from the program this year, with opportunities available across Liberia’s 15 counties.
He also cited the National Youth Dialogue and YouthConnekt as platforms that enable young people to exchange ideas, build networks, and contribute to discussions on national development.
The UNDP representative further underscored the importance of Liberia’s National Action Plan on Youth, Peace and Security 2025–2030 in strengthening young people’s participation in peacebuilding and governance.
The summit, organized by the Liberia Diplomatic Club under the theme “Awakening Liberia’s Leadership Potential,” brought together policymakers, diplomats, development partners, and emerging leaders to discuss leadership, governance, and Liberia’s development priorities.
The gathering also highlighted the importance of learning from Liberia’s history and applying its lessons to promote reconciliation, strengthen institutions, and build a more inclusive society.
