MONROVIA, Oct. 18 (LINA) — Cllr. Charlyne M. Brumskine, Liberia’s newly sworn-in judge of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, has been elected President of the regional court.

Brumskine announced her election on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, describing the achievement as a humbling moment for Liberia.

She was sworn in on October 6, 2026, in Abuja, Nigeria, as Liberia’s representative on the five-member bench for the 2026–2030 term.

Her appointment was confirmed by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its 69th Ordinary Summit, held in Lungi, Sierra Leone, on July 19, 2026.

Brumskine is the first Liberian woman to serve as a judge of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.

In a statement following her election as president, Brumskine expressed gratitude for the overwhelming congratulations, prayers, and goodwill she had received since her initial swearing-in.

“I was so overwhelmed with gratitude that I couldn’t even find the words to compose a social media post. Yet, I understood that the celebrations were not so much about Charlyne Brumskine, the lawyer. They were about something far greater. They were about what this moment meant for our beloved country, Liberia,” she said.

Brumskine disclosed that before departing Liberia for Abuja, she paid a courtesy visit to President Joseph N. Boakai and sought his final words of advice ahead of her four-year tenure.

“I told him I was leaving for four years and asked whether he had any final words of advice for me. His response was simple but profound: ‘Make sure they know what Liberia is made of,’” she recounted.

She said the president’s words remained with her as she contested the presidency of the regional court.

Brumskine also expressed gratitude to Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, crediting her with working tirelessly to ensure Liberia secured a seat on the Court for the 2026–2030 term.

“To H.E. Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, thank you for your tireless efforts and determination to ensure that Liberia secured a seat on the Court for 2026 to 2030. This moment is also a testament to your hard work,” she said.

She thanked fellow Liberians for their support, emphasizing that she would carry the country’s hopes and pride into her new role.

“I carry your hopes, your pride, and our flag with me. I intend to serve the ECOWAS Court, its Community and Member States with excellence and integrity,” Brumskine stated.

Brumskine is the daughter of the late Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, founder of the Liberty Party.

She graduated from Columbia University and Howard University School of Law. She is the founder of CMB Law Group and a former lecturer at the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law.

She also placed first in Liberia’s 2022 Supreme Court Bar Examination.
