Min. Piah Urges Media To Desist From Falsehood In US$19M Drug Seizure

MONROVIA, June 28 (LINA) – The Minister of Information (MOI), Jerolinmek M. Piah has reacted strongly to media reports labeling Liberia a “diplomatic pouch for drugs. He said such claims are misleading and have the potential to damage the country’s international reputation.

Speaking with specific reference to the recent US$19 million cocaine seizure at Roberts International Airport (RIA) on June 8, 2026, Minister Piah said the current progress in the investigation, including the voluntary appearance of persons of interest, shows that the government is keen and serious about its zero-tolerance stance on drugs.

“The fact that individuals named in connection with this case are being brought forth and are cooperating with the Joint National Security Investigative Task Force proves that Liberia is not a safe haven for narcotics trafficking,” Minister Piah stated.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing Tuesday, June 23, 2026 Minister Piah indicated that the Boakai-Koung administration will follow the facts wherever they lead, regardless of status or influence stressing there will be no more business as usual.

The Minister warned those spreading what he termed as misleading and diabolical lies to desist, noting that such narratives have the propensity to destroy Liberia’s diplomatic relationships and undermine years of rebuilding trust with international partners.

He argued that the Boakai administration has been working to restore Liberia’s image on the global stage, emphasizing that effort is gaining serious diplomatic recognition after years of reputational damage.

“What the past administration destroyed, this government is working hard to rebuild. We will not allow false narratives to set us back” he said.

Minister Piah reaffirmed the Government of Liberia’s zero tolerance policy on drugs, emphasizing that anyone caught in the illicit act will be dealt with in line with the laws of the country. He added that due process will be respected, but accountability will not be compromised.

The Minister’s comments come as investigators continue probing the full chain of criminal responsibility linked to the 237.6 kilograms of cocaine seized at RIA. Several persons of interest have already presented themselves to authorities, while national and international efforts remain ongoing to locate others who are still at large.

The Liberia Information Minister said the government will continue to provide updates consistent with due process and the integrity of the active investigation. He cautioned the public and media to verify facts before publishing reports that could harm Liberia’s standing abroad.
