MONROVIA, May 23 (LINA) – Sinoe County officials, led by Superintendent Alexander Nah Sleweon Sr., have vowed to address illegal Burkinabés activities across several communities, citing concerns over peace and traditional values.

The move follows recent discussions with residents and leaders in Pellekon, Voogbardee, Dagbe Town, and Judu Town, who expressed worries about the rise in activities by Burkinabés.

“We’re taking action to preserve harmony and prevent conflicts,” Superintendent Sleweon said, assuring the process will be lawful and consultative.

Residents welcomed the plan, hoping it will boost social cohesion and development. They also presented pressing concerns, including lack of infrastructure and job opportunities, which the county administration pledged to address.

The county’s youth representative thanked Supt. Sleweon for visiting and highlighted issues like insecurity, lack of youth centers, and unemployment.

Supt. Sleweon promised security deployment and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to community development.

The influx of Burkinabés into Liberia has indeed raised serious concerns among Liberian citizens. Over 40,000 undocumented Burkinabés have fled to Liberia due to violence and climate change, settling mainly in the southeastern region. This has sparked worries about national security, land disputes, and strain on local resources.

While the Liberian government, with international support, is making frantic efforts to address the issue through registration and dialogue. The EU has warned of potential spillover effects from the Sahel crisis, emphasizing the need for regional cooperation.
