SINJE TOWN, June 24 (LINA) – The Makpouma Descendants Development Association (MADDA) is on the verge of making history in Grand Cape Mount County with the near completion of what is expected to be the county’s first citizen-sponsored medical center.
The construction of the Makpouma Medical Center, which commenced in March 2024, is now 98 percent complete, according to Project Director Mohammed V. Nyei. The ambitious initiative has been fully financed by the children and grandchildren of Makpouma residing in Liberia and across the diaspora.
MADDA is a development association comprising descendants from five ancestral settlements located across western Liberia, Bomi County, and Grand Cape Mount County, with Makpouma recognized as the original settlement.
Speaking to the Liberia News Agency over the weekend, Mr. Nyei disclosed that the groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held on a five-acre parcel of land donated by the chiefs and elders of Vonzuan and neighboring communities along the Bendu Highway in Gawula District.
Upon completion, the Makpouma Medical Center will operate as a 30-bed facility equipped with all major healthcare departments approved by the Grand Cape Mount County Health Team.
The center will also include fully furnished residential quarters for doctors and nurses, a 24-hour electricity system, and a reliable water supply to serve the entire compound.
Nyei said the facility will be capable of performing surgical procedures and delivering a broad range of essential healthcare services to residents of Gawula District and other parts of Grand Cape Mount County.
The initiative has attracted widespread praise from citizens, many of whom have described the project as a historic and transformative investment in the county’s healthcare sector.
Public appreciation grew further following MADDA’s receipt of a 40-foot container of assorted medical equipment and supplies from the United States-based humanitarian organization, Project C.U.R.E.
The donation came after a request submitted by the association’s International Coordinator, Mohammed Ali Nyei, and a needs assessment conducted last year by a representative of Project C.U.R.E.
Demonstrating its commitment to strengthening healthcare beyond its flagship project, MADDA also donated medical supplies to the government-run Sinje Comprehensive Health Center.
The Officer-in-Charge of the Grand Cape Mount County Health Team, Dr. Daniel Kofa, lauded the gesture, describing the support as “overwhelming” and indicative of the association’s commitment to collaborating with county health authorities to improve healthcare delivery.
Meanwhile, recruitment for positions at the new medical center has been completed, with shortlisted candidates expected to undergo interviews in the coming weeks.
MADDA is also undertaking major rehabilitation works on the road leading to the facility to ensure easy access for patients and healthcare workers when the center officially opens.
The completion of the Makpouma Medical Center marks a significant milestone in community-driven development and is expected to substantially improve access to quality healthcare services in Grand Cape Mount County.
