MONROVIA, July 3 (LINA) – The West African Nation of Ghana has been hit by torrential rains, resulting in severe damage of properties and paralyzed activities due to the heavy downpour which began Sunday June 28, 2026.

According to local media reports, the torrential rains caused flooding across Accra, as Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama blamed climate change and the building on waterways.

As flooding is common in most West African nations including Liberia, during rainy seasons, President Mahama said the inundations in Accra have become worse in recent years due to rapid urbanization, the building on and blocking of waterways, and a lack of investment in drainage infrastructure.

He disclosed that 140 millimeters of rain fell on the city in Accra in a single day, terming it as “the highest experienced in several years,” and nearly triple last year’s rainfalls.

Using his social media handle on Monday, June 29, 2026, Mahama continued: “That aspect of the problem is beyond our control because it is driven by changing climatic conditions”.

The President unveiled that while it is true that climate change confronting the world, which Ghana is not an exception, the Ghanaian leader warned that “the issue of human behavior” has been signaled as one of the major problems. He added that in addressing the issue, whenever the government takes actions in order to clear the waterways, citizens described the government as being “inhumane”.

“Whenever the government begins removing structures built in waterways, some people accuse us of being inhumane, Pres. Mahama noted. “Yet when disasters such as today’s flooding occur, the consequences affect everyone”.

Unveiling how severe the situation is which has caught the attentions of the government and other international media, local media reports indicated that in the eastern suburb of Tse Addo, emergency responders and local volunteers used boats to rescue at least 15 children and an infant after rains that started at 3:00 am flooded the area.

Authorities have advised citizens to remain where they are, motorists and pediatricians to remain indoors as the government explores necessary efforts to have the situation resolved.
